UNICA: Several sugarcane mills wrap up 2016-’17 season

 

UNICA, the Brazilian sugarcane industry association, recently released a crop update for the second half of October, reporting ethanol production in the south-central region during the period reached 1.3 billion liters (343.42 million gallons), including 625.25 million liters of anhydrous ethanol and 677.78 million liters of hydrous ethanol. Mills in the south-central region of Brazil processed 31.75 million metric tons of sugarcane during the second half of October, down from 38.65 million metric tons during the same period of last year. Sugar production reached 2.05 million metric tons.

According to UNICA, 537.31 million metric tons of sugarcane were processed from the beginning of April through Nov. 1, producing 32.07 million tons of sugar and 22.57 billion liters of ethanol, including 9.55 billion liters of anhydrous ethanol and 13.03 billion liters of hydrous ethanol.

As of the close of October, UNICA reported 55 mills had closed for the 2016-’17 harvest, compared to 18 during the same period of last year. These 55 mills reported a 11.86 percent decrease in grinding when compared to the previous season. During the first half of November, 40 additional mills were expected to close for the season.

Ethanol sales by mills in south-central Brazil reached 2.11 billion liters in October, including 74.45 million liters destined for export and 2.04 billion liters sold into the domestic market. UNICA said that in the domestic market, the monthly sales of anhydrous ethanol reached 819.28 million liters, down 1.52 percent from September, with sales of hydrous ethanol at 1.22 billion liters, down 11.92 percent when compared to September.
